Virginia Tech's Marshall Bailey is in fifth place near the end of the second round of the 2010 SunTrustState Open of Virginia at the 7,127 yards, par 72 Independence GolfClub in Midlothian on Friday. Play was suspended by darkness after the field was forced into a more than three-hour weather delay in the afternoon.
Bailey, a rising senior from Fincastle, shot a four-under-par 68 for a total of nine-under-par 135.Bailey is the second-lowest amateur and is four strokes behind clubhouse leader Rick Schuller, a PGA Professional from Chester and the 1998 State Open Champion.
Rising sophomore Mikey Moyers of Stanardsville is one-under-par and tied for 27th place at 143 after a one-under-par 71 on Friday.Garland Green, a rising senior from Tazewell, is tied for 40th at 145 after a three-under-par 69 in the second round. Aaron Eckstein, a rising senior from Salem, is also tied for 40th at 145. Head coach Jay Hardwick withdrew from the event and Moyers' father, Mike, is tied for 80th.
The second round will be completed on Saturday morning, beginning at 8:30 a.m.The cut will then be made and the third round will then begin at 11 a.m. The low70 players and ties will advance to the final two rounds. Forty players still need to complete their second round.
