Hokies well-represented at the State Open

Virginia Tech has four student-athletes and head coach JayHardwick set to tee off Thursday morning at 2010 SunTrust State Open ofVirginia at the 7,127 yards, par 72 Independence Golf Club in Midlothian. Thechampionship will be played Thursday-Sunday, July 15-18.

 

The SunTrust State Open boasts a field of professionals andamateurs from the Commonwealth. PGA Professional Faber Jamerson of Appomattoxshot a final round 2-under-par 70 to cruise to win last year’s SunTrust StateOpen of Virginia at Independence Golf Club.

 

Garland Green, a rising senior from Tazewell, Virginia, wasfully exempt due to being a semifinalist at the 2009 VSGA Amateur Championship.Green was the No. 4-ranked golfer in the season-ending 2009 VSGA playerrankings. Also earning full exemption entering the event is Hardwick, who wonthe 2009 Senior Open of Virginia last September.

 

Joining Green and Hardwick in the event, is Marshall Bailey,a rising senior from Fincastle, Aaron Eckstein, a rising senior from Salem andMikey Moyers, a rising sophomore from Stanardsville. Moyers’ father, Mike, isalso competing in the tournament. He was tied for low senior professional atthe 2009 SunTrust State Open of Virginia.

 

The SunTrust State Open of Virginia is a 72-hole, strokeplay event with the field limited to 168 golfers (80 eligible Virginia PGAmembers and apprentices, 80 eligible amateurs, the defending champion and sevenOpen qualifiers). The field will be cut to the low 70 players and ties followingthe completion of 36 holes.
