Hokies tied for eighth at the Brickyard

MACON, Ga. – The Virginia Tech golf team shot an opening round 296 and is tied with Florida State and Penn State in eighth place in the Brickyard Collegiate Championship on Saturday afternoon at the par 72, 7,175-yard Brickyard at Riverside golf course in Macon, Ga.

Freshman Mike Moyers (Standardsville, Va.) is tied for the lead after the first 18 holes. He shot a three-under-par 69 and is tied with six other golfers for the lead. Moyer's round included four birdies and an eagle three on the par-five, 477-yard ninth hole.

Junior Marshall Bailey (Fincastle, Va.) fired an even-par 72 and is tied for 16th and junior Garland Green (Tazewell, Va.) shot a 76 and is tied for 50th. Junior Aaron Eckstein (Salem, Va.) and sophomore Blake Redmond (Sugar Land, Tex.) each shot 79 and are tied for 72nd place.

Freshman Jacob Everts (Ooltewah, Tenn.) is playing the tournament as an individual and is tied for 79th place after his first round 82.

Augusta State holds the first round lead following at 282, nine strokes ahead of Chattanooga and VCU. Clemson, LSU and North Florida are tied for fourth place at 293 and Mississippi is in seventh place at 294, two strokes ahead of the Hokies, Seminoles and Nittany Lions. Charlotte is 11th at 297, Georgia Tech is 12th at 298 and host Mercer is 13th at 299. Georgia is 14th at 300 and Michigan is 15th at 312.

The second round will be played Sunday and the final round will be held on Monday.
