BLACKSBURG, Va.- Senior Sara Smith was named to the 2009 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District III at-large team, as announced by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). Smith garnered second team honors for the second straight season.
To be nominated, the student-athlete must be a starter or important reserve with at least a 3.30 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) for his/her career. A student-athlete is not eligible until he/she has reached sophomore athletic and academic standing at his/her current institution. In the case of transfers, graduate students and junior college graduates, the athlete must have completed one full academic year at the nominating institution to be eligible.
The native of McGaheysville, Va., adds the award to an impressive resume as a member of the H2Okie squad. Smith concluded her career with two Tech team records, two War Memorial Pool records along with two ACC records.
At the 2009 ACC Championships, Smith proved to be the fastest swimmer in the ACC as she won both the 50 and 100-yard freestyle titles while posting new conference top-times in each event. Smith also assisted in the H2Okies top showing in the 200 free-relay, with a time of 1:29.29.
