McDonald completes first day at the NCAA Championships

COLLEGE STATION, Texas- Virginia Tech men’s swimming and diving team took the pool on the first day at the NCAA Championships in College Station, Texas. Texas leads the competition with 171 points. Junior Mikey McDonald was the only H2Okie in action this evening.

McDonald, who last year became the first H2Okie diver to qualify for the NCAA Championships, competed in the 1-meter dive for Tech. The junior from Annandale, Va. posted a score of 329.80 in the event for a 16th place showing in the preliminary round. McDonald finished in 14th place with a score of 341.15 and scored three points for Tech.

“Mikey did an extremely good job in a very talented group of divers,” said head diving coach Ron Piemonte. “He was up against two NCAA finalists and a former NCAA champion and showed great poise and consistency during the competition.”

Tomorrow Tech will look to score in the 100 back and the 3-meter dive event. Follow all the action live at http://www.aggieathletics.com/ncaa2009/swimming/men/.
