Willoughby garners honorable mention All-America honors

BLACKSBURG, Va. - Sophomore middle blocker Felicia Willoughby garnered honorable mention All-America honors, the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) announced on Wednesday, becoming only the second Hokie volleyball player in program history to earn All-American recognition.

The honor caps Willoughby’s strong 2008 campaign, in which the Pleasanton, Calif., native led the Atlantic Coast Conference in hitting percentage, striking at a single season Tech-record .402 clip on the season. For her efforts, Willoughby earned All-AVCA East Region status and first-team All-ACC honors for her performance in 2008.

Willoughby led the Hokies in kills with 326, averaging a team-best 2.83 kills per set, and blocks with 117, averaging another team-high 1.02 blocks per set on the year. The middle blocker played a huge part in the Hokies winning 20 matches for the first time since 2002.

With the honor, Willoughby became only the second Hokie to achieve All-American status. In 2006, Katie Esbrook earned honorable mention All-America honors after hitting .340 on the year. The Barrington, Ill., finished her career as the Tech leader in hitting percentage, hitting .324, and block assists, racking up 374.
