Tech takes on top-seeded Tar Heels in ACC title bout

CARY, N.C. – The Virginia Tech women’s soccer team will take the field on Sunday, Nov. 9 for a chance to bring an ACC Championship back to Blacksburg. Standing in the Hokies’ path is North Carolina, winner of 19 national titles, 18 ACC Championships and the No. 1 seed in this year’s tournament. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. at WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary, N.C.

Tech advanced its first finals match after once again defeating a nationally ranked opponent in the penalty kick round of yesterday’s semifinal. The Hokies edged No. 5 Florida State 4-2 during the tie-breaker in Wednesday’s quarterfinal before slipping past No. 12 Virginia 2-1 in penalty kicks in Friday’s semifinal contest.

During the regular season, North Carolina was the only team to hold the Hokies scoreless, posting a 4-0 victory in Chapel Hill, N.C., on Sunday, Oct. 12. This Sunday’s championship match will be the sixth meeting between the two squads. Virginia Tech is 0-5 all-time against the Tar Heels.

UNC is led by ACC Offensive Player of the Year, Casey Nogueira, while Second Team All-ACC honoree Emily Jukich will anchor the Tech attack.

Hokiesports.com will carry gametracker coverage and a live audio feed of the match. Fans can also catch the contest live on Fox Sports South, Sun Sports, NESN and Comcast SportsNet.
