H2Okies sweep Clemson in second home meet

BLACKSBURG, Va.The Virginia Tech swimming and diving team swept the afternoon meet at War Memorial Pool over Clemson. The men (3-1, 2-1) captured its second win of the season in the ACC, 187-103, while the women (3-1, 2-1) posted a 182-118 win. The team’s combined to win 21 events and broke three school records.

“I was really surprised of how fast we swam this afternoon,” said head coach Ned Skinner. “We trained very hard this week and this is the time of the year we need to stay tough in the weight room, on dry land and in the pool. Our leadership on both sides is fantastic and everyone is feeding of the senior’s positive tone.”

The meet kicked off with the H2Okies women capturing a victory in the 200 medley relay. Seniors Jordan McHorney, Megan Newell, Sara Smith and junior Jessica Earl touched in with a time of 1:41.54, breaking the Tech record that was set in the first meet this season.

Earl swam in 100 breast event, claiming nine points and a victory for the H2Okies. The junior crossed the line in 1:05.20 and freshman Katie Priess swam to a second place finish in the race at 1:06.06. Earl also finished in third place in 200 breast competition with a time of 2:22.84. Newell posted wins in the 100 and 200 fly events. The senior set a new War Memorial Pool record in the 100 fly with a time of 54.66 while finishing first in the 200 fly, touching in at 2:02.88.

Meanwhile, Smith broke the pool record in the 200 IM, she recently held, with a time of 2:03.45. The senior also tallied a second place finish in the 50 free in 23.00 and claimed first in the 100 free, swimming the race in 50.36.

Junior Sara Shapiro captured the 100 back crown, while classmate Kelly deMarrais posted a win in the 200 back. The former swam her race in 56.82, with the latter touhed in at 2:02.39. Shapiro competed in the 200 back, placing third with a time of 2:03.97, while deMarrais clocked a time of 1:51.25 in the 200 free, good for second place.

In diving action, sophomore Sarah Milton posted a first place finish in 1-meter dive and second place in the 3-meter event, posting scores of 281.10 and 290.77, respectively. Freshman Cara Murnan captured her first victory of the season in the 3-meter, posting a score of 304.88 in the event.

On the men’s side, senior Ian deToll, junior Jonathan Huss, sophomore Richard Ulatowski and freshman Charlie Higgins scored a first place finish in the 200 medley relay event. The team touched in with a time of 1:30.92 to capture the first 11 points for the H2Okie men.

Higgins registered a first place finish in the 100 back in 49.52 and second in the 200 back, touching in at 1:51.05. Meanwhile, Huss posted a victory in the 100 breast, touching in at 56.81. Ulatowski captured the 50 free title, with a time of 20.68 and second in the 100 free, finishing behind sophomore Stephen Hawkins. Ulatowksi touched in at 46.39 while Hawkins crossed the line in 46.33.

In the 200 free event junior Chip Hughes crossed the line in 1:42.06 claiming nine more points for the H2Okies.

The H2Okies went one-two-three in three races on the men side. Sophomore Trey Stewart (1:50.99), and freshmen Matt Baumler (1:52.41), Blake Trabuchi-Downey (1:52.68) finished in the top-three in 200 fly action. In the 100 free, Trabuchi-Downey staked first (9:30.24), followed by junior Griffin Lutterbein (9:35.11) and senior Ben Miller (9:35.33), while sophomore Carter Moore (2:06.86), Huss (2:08.02) and freshman Nevin Cook (2:10.06) took the top-three spots in the 200 breast.

In diving competition junior Mikey McDonald took home first in the 3-meter dive. The junior registered a score of 407.40.

The H2Okies will be back in action on Nov.19-22 at the Volunteer Invitational in Knoxville, Tenn. The teams will compete against Kentucky and host Tennessee.
