Virginia Tech golfer Drew Weaver made astrong charge on the final nine holes on Tuesday afternoon, including birdies on three ofthe final four holes, and is in a playoff for the final two spots inmatch play. The tournament is being played at the 2008 U.S. Amateur Championship at the 7,030-yard,par 70 No. 4 Course at the Pinehurst Resort and Country Club inPinehurst, N.C.
Weaver finished in a group of 26players tied for 63rd place. The top 64 scores advance tomatch play on Wednesday. The 26 players will playoff for the finaltwo berths in the match play at No. 4 beginning at 7:30 a.m. onWednesday. The 26 competitors in the playoff is the second most inAmateur history, eclipsed only by the 31 players in 1988
A rising senior from High Point, N.C.,Weaver entered the final round of stroke play at four-over-par 74 and madethe turn at three-over-par, before his strong finish. Weaver birdiedthe 10th hole to get it back to plus-two, but thendouble-bogeyed the 501 yard par 4 13th hole. He thenfinished his round with birdies on holes 15, 16 and 17, beforefinishing with a par on the 18th hole.
Play continues Wednesday with thebeginning of match play for the low 64 scorers. The championship runsthrough the end of the week, with the 36-hole final match scheduledfor Sunday.
