Green named first-team academic All-American

BLACKSBURG, Va. - Virginia Tech's Sherlenia Green has been named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America Women's Track & Field and Cross Country Team, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

Green, who recently completed her senior year, competed in the sprints and hurdles for the Hokies, and recently represented Tech in the 100-meter and 400-meter hurdle events at the U.S. Track and Field Olympic Trials in Eugene, Ore.

At the NCAA Outdoor Championships in June, she placed ninth in the 400-meter hurdles and 15th as part of the 4x400-meter relay team. A three-time ACC champion, Green ends her Tech career as the school record-holder in six events (four outdoor, two indoor), including the 400 meters, the 500 meters, the 4x100-meter relay, the 4x400-meter relay and the distance medley relay.

Green is a Vernon Hills, Ill., native and held a 4.0 grade point average in health and physical education at the time of her nomination for the All-District III team. She earned first-team status for the district in early June to become eligible for the All-America Team, to which she was selected to on June 25.

Green becomes just the third women's track and field student-athlete in Virginia Tech history to be named a first-team academic All-American, following Gunild Kreb in 2007 and Katie Ollendick in 1997 and 1998.

The Academic All-America program annually honors over 1,600 student-athletes who have succeeded at the highest level on the playing field and in the classroom. Individuals are selected through voting by CoSIDA, a 2,000-member organization consisting of sports public relations professionals for colleges and universities in the United States and Canada. Since the program's inception in 1952, CoSIDA has bestowed Academic All-America honors on more than 14,000 student-athletes in Divisions I, II, III and NAIA covering all NCAA championship sports.

To be eligible, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative grade point average of 3.20 on a scale of 4.00, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings at his/her current institution and be nominated by his/her sports information director.
