H2Okies put forth good showing at Olympic Trials

OMAHA, Neb. - Three Virginia Tech women's swimmers competed at the U.S. Olympic Team Trials on Thursday at the Qwest Center, and despite putting forth solid efforts, were all eliminated following preliminary competition.

Rising senior Sara Smith kicked things off in the 100-meter freestyle and placed 29th in 55.91 seconds. The McGaheysville, Va., native will get another chance to swim, though, as she is slated to participate in the 50-meter freestyle on Saturday.

Departed senior Jessica Botzum and rising sophomore Sarah Losinger then competed in the 200-meter breaststroke. After missing the final of the 100-meter breaststroke by 0.02 seconds on Monday, Botzum (Raleigh, N.C.) fell just short of the semifinal of the 200-meter event by 0.29 seconds, finishing 18th in 2:31.63. Losinger (Marietta, Ga.) took 63rd in 2:37.62.

Incoming freshman Jace Howanitz (Knoxville, Tenn.) swam in the women's 200-meter individual medley on Tuesday and finished 89th in 2:21.77.

Departed senior Pete Cancila will compete in the men's 50-meter freestyle on Friday.
