SAN ANTONIO, Texas - Virginia Tech men's basketball player Deron Washington has been selected to compete in the 20th annual State Farm College Slam Dunk and 3-Point Championships on Thursday, April 3, 2008 at the Greehey Arena on the campus of St. Mary's University in San Antonio, Texas. The event will air on ESPN, beginning at 9 p.m. EDT.
Washington, a senior from New Orleans, La., is one of eight competitors in the slam dunk portion of the event. Joining him are James Gist of Maryland, J.R. Giddens of New Mexico, Patrick Ewing Jr., of Georgetown, Brian Randle of Illinois, Joey Dorsey of Memphis, Will Bullard of Texas A&M - Corpus Cristi and Sonny Weems of Arkansas.
The event kicks off the Final Four weekend, and will also feature a men's and a women's three-point shooting contest.
Washington recently completed his Virginia Tech career, as he led the Hokies to a 21-14 overall record and a fourth-place finish in the Atlantic Coast Conference regular season, with a 9-7 league record. The Hokies also advanced to the quarterfinals of the National Invitation Tournament.
Washington ended his career 16th in career scoring at Tech, with 1,408 points, sixth in career blocked shots, with 115 and 10th in career steals, with 151. He joins Bobby Beecher and Bryant Matthews as the only Hokies in school history to record 1,400 points, 600 rebounds, 100 steals and 100 blocked shots.
