National Champions

Two National Champions, Six NCAA Finals Appearances

In the 96 years of Virginia Tech wrestling, there had never been a champion in program history. In Robie's second season at the helped guide Mekhi Lewis to the program's first national title in 2019. Then five years later, would add to the tally as Caleb Henson captured the second title for the program. With Robie on staff, four Hokies have appeared in six finals - Devin Carter, 2013; Jared Haught, 2018; Lewis, 2019 and 2022; Henson, 2024 and 2025.

At the 2019 NCAA Championships, Mekhi Lewis made history as the first national champion in Virginia Tech wrestling history. Seeded eighth, Lewis defeated No. 1 Iowa's Alex Marinelli, No. 4 Wisconsin's Evan Wick, and the returning two-time national champion, No. 2 Penn State's Vincenzo Joseph, in succession to claim the 165-pound crown. Lewis would also be named the championship's Outstanding Wrestler.

Caleb Henson - 2024 National Champion

History was made yet again at the 2024 NCAA Championships when Caleb Henson became the second national champion in Virginia Tech wrestling history. Seeded fourth, Henson defeated No. 29 South Dakota State's Alek Martin, No. 20 Oklahoma State's Jordan Williams, No. 5 West Virginia's Ty Watters, No. 1 Nebraska's Ridge Lovett, and No. 8 Michigan's Austin Gomez in succession to claim the 149-pound title. Henson emerged with a 15-7 major decision which was the biggest victory spread among all finals matches.

In 2021-2022 - a year removed from a season ending injury in 2021 - Lewis made history yet again by becoming the program's first two-time national finalist. As the No. 2 seed, Lewis pinned No. 3 Logan Massa in the semifinals to return to the NCAA finals at 174-pounds.

Henson etched his name once again into the history books in 2025 to become the program's first back-to-back finalist and just the second two-time finalist for the Hokies. Henson would advance to the finals yet again looking to defend his title but would fall just short in a controversial finish at the 2025 NCAA Championships.

Devin Carter - 2013 National Finalist

Carter re-wrote the record book at Virginia Tech. He won 121 career matches with 38 pins and became the school’s first NCAA finalist when he advanced to the finals at the 2013 NCAA Championships. The Christiansburg native was the first three-time All-American, first four-time ACC Champion, and his 19 NCAA Championship tournament wins rank second in program history. He was named ACC Wrestler of the Year in 2012-2013 as well as the conference’s Co-Rookie of the Year for 2011-2012.

Jared Haught - 2018 National Finalist

Haught was a two-time ACC champion, four-time NCAA qualifier and a three-time All-American for the Hokies from 2014-18. As a senior, Haught became only the second Tech wrestler and the first West Virginia native to make it to a national final when he reached the championship match at 197 pounds at the 2018 NCAA Championships in Cleveland.

Virginia Tech All-Americans

58 Podium Finishes and Counting...

Tech has four-time NCAA All-American, seven three-time All-Americans, nine two-time All-Americans, and 13 Hokies who have secured All-American status.

The Hokies are one of four programs (VT, Penn State, Iowa, Cornell) in the country who have had three or more All-Americans for 12-straight seasons. 

Recognize and Cultivate Talent

Over the course of Virginia Tech wrestling's history, there have been 58 All-American honors brought back to Blacksburg - 31 of those honors coming from 2017 to present since Tony Robie took the reins as head coach of the Hokies.
