Beamer to be inducted into Orange Bowl Hall of Fame

MIAMI LAKES, Fla. – Following his induction into the College Football Hall of Fame last night in New York City, former Virginia Tech head football coach Frank Beamer has been selected as an inductee into the Orange Bowl Hall of Fame, the Orange Bowl committee announced Wednesday.

Beamer's fellow inductees include Derrick Alexander (Florida State), Scott Frost (Nebraska), Bob Stoops (Oklahoma) and Shaun Alexander (Alabama). The five will be honored at the annual AvMed Orange Bowl Coaches Luncheon presented by AutoNation on Friday, December 28 at Jungle Island in Miami the day before the College Football Playoff Semifinal at the Capital One Orange Bowl, and presented to the crowd during an on-field ceremony.

Under Beamer, the Hokies went to four Orange Bowls in 1996, 2008, 2009 and 2011. Those four appearances were headlined by a 20-7 win over Cincinnati in the 2009 game, capping off a season where the Hokies went 10-4 and won its second consecutive ACC championship.

In 1987, Beamer became the head coach at his alma mater Virginia Tech, where he would win a school-record 238 games in 29 seasons (1987-2015). Arguably, his best season came in 1999 when he earned consensus National Coach of the Year honors after leading Virginia Tech to an appearance in the BCS National Championship at the Sugar Bowl following the program's first 11-win season and first undefeated regular season in school history.

A three-time BIG EAST Coach of the Year (1995, 1996, 1999), Beamer was named ACC Coach of the Year in 2004 and 2005. He was the consensus National Coach of the Year in 1999.
