Virginia Tech never trails in 9-3 victory against Notre Dame

BLACKSBURG – The No. 23/20 Virginia Tech Hokies took a 5-0 lead in the first inning and never trailed from there on the way to a 9-3 victory over the Notre Dame Fighting Irish on Saturday.

Junior Emma Lemley (3-1) got the win for Virginia Tech (14-3-1, ). The right-hander went 5.2 shutout innings, giving up two hits, three walks and striking out five.

Offensively, the Hokies were led by junior Bre Peck, who went 1-for-3 on the day with a home run and three RBI. Senior Cameron Fagan put together a noteworthy day at the plate as well, going 1-for-4 with a home run and two RBI. Senior Addy Greene also helped out for Virginia Tech, putting together three hits in three trips to the plate while adding two doubles and a walk.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Hokies got on the board immediately, starting their scoring with one run in the bottom of the first inning. Virginia Tech hit two home runs in the inning on the way to scoring five runs.

The Hokies then held the Fighting Irish scoreless before getting back on the board the very next inning. Virginia Tech scored twice on Fagan's two-run homer, which brought the score to 7-0 in favor of the Hokies.

Virginia Tech held Notre Dame scoreless before building their lead to 8-0 in the fourth inning.

The Fighting Irish gained ground, closing the gap to 8-3 until Virginia Tech added some insurance in the fifth. The Hokies drove in a run on freshman Emma Mazzarone's two-out solo homer off junior Shannon Becker, bringing the score to 9-3 in favor of Virginia Tech. The score remained 9-3 for the rest of the game, as the Hokies coasted to the win.
