Elizabeth Kitley earns ACC Player of the Week honors

CHARLOTTE – Virginia Tech center Elizabeth Kitley earned ACC Player of the Week honors the conference announced Monday afternoon. For the graduate student, it is her sixth time winning the award this season and fourth week in a row.

The only other ACC women's basketball player to win six Player of the Week honors in a single season is Duke's Alana Beard who did it twice, in 2002-03 and 2003-04.

Kitley propelled the Hokies to a second victory over North Carolina this season and in doing so secured at least a share of the ACC regular season title. On her Senior Day, the graduate student led all scorers with 34 points, tying her season high in that category. She was 11-17 from the field and hit 12 of 14 free throws.

The Hokies are 23-4 (14-2) on the season following a 74-62 victory over North Carolina. With the win, the Hokies have secured the one seed in next month's ACC Tournament, and own at least a share of the ACC regular season title, both program firsts.

It was also the 25th consecutive victory at Cassell Coliseum, tying the program record for longest home winning streak. The Hokies have now gone undefeated at home in a regular season three times.

Tech has won 10 straight in ACC play in the same season for the first time ever.

Subsequently, the Hokies rose in the AP poll to fifth, the highest position that Virginia Tech women's basketball has held in the regular season ever.

The Hokies are back in action on Thursday, Feb. 29 for a 7 p.m. tip against the No. 17 Notre Dame Fighting Irish. That game can be seen on ESPN.
