In a massive step towards the goal of progressing from a challenger to a champion brand, Virginia Tech sent a team to an NCAA Tournament or bowl game in football, men's and women's soccer, men's and women's basketball, women's golf, softball and baseball, standing along as the only FBS school to accomplish that feat.
- Football: Became bowl eligible for the 28th time in 29 seasons, with playing in the Pinstripe Bowl.
- Men's Soccer: Rose to as high as No. 8 in the national rankings. Defeated Campbell in the NCAA Tournament First Round.
- Women's Soccer: Qualified for NCAA Tournament for the 8th time in last 11 seasons. Defeated Ohio State in the first round.
- Men's Basketball: Punched a ticket to the NCAA Tournament with the program's first ACC Tournament championship.
- Women's Basketball: Compiled program-best 13-5 ACC record to secure second consecutive at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament.
- Women's Golf: Stamped the program's fourth NCAA Regional bid in just seven years of existence.
- Softball: Completed regular season as the ACC Champions and were awarded hosting both NCAA Regionals and Super Regionals for the first time in program history.
- Baseball: Crowned ACC regular-season champions. Advanced to host Super Regionals in Blacksburg for the first time ever.
This success across multiple sports extends throughout the department, with many notable superlatives. The Hokies finished eighth as a team in the NCAA Wrestling Championships in Detroit, with three All-Americans gracing the podium. Track and field is currently in the NCAA Outdoor Championships in Eugene, Oregon, but already were donned the ACC indoor men's and women's champions in March 2022. Two Hokies, Rachel Baxter and Lindsey Butler, took home NCAA gold in their respective events at the 2022 NCAA Indoor Championships
In the pool, head coach Sergio Lopez Miro's teams had banner years at the NCAA Championships. The women finished 23rd overall, while the men rose to a program-best finish at 11th in the country. On the links, men's golf's Connor Burgess represented Virginia Tech in an NCAA Regional after a strong regular season. The men's tennis program also represented Virginia Tech in the NCAA Championships, as Ryan Fishback and Jordan Chrysostom made the trip to compete in doubles for the second straight season.
The success of the 2021-2022 year in Virginia Tech Athletics directly correlates to the pillars of the Reach for Excellence campaign. Originally launched in April 2021, a main goal of the campaign was to maintain a department that promotes comprehensive excellence for all sports. Tremendous strides have been made to sustain the success that these programs have enjoyed this year, but the work is not finished to keep all Hokie sports near the top of the ACC and in national contention. To strive for the continued success of Virginia Tech Athletics.
