Virgina Tech to compete in 2022 Spring Soccer Cup

BLACKSBURG – Virginia Tech will compete in the upcoming 2022 Spring Soccer Cup with the finals being played at Wake Forest in Winston-Salem, N.C. on Sunday, April 10.
 
Prior to the finals, Tech will play at Maryland on March 5, against Georgetown on March 26 and against defending College Cup champions Clemson on April 2. 
 
Ten teams are in the Spring Soccer Cup field: Clemson, Georgetown, Wake Forest, North Carolina, Duke, NC State, Maryland, Virginia, Virginia Tech and Pitt. In the last four seasons, those ten programs have combined for 30 NCAA Tournament appearances, eight College Cup appearances and three national championships.
 
In addition to competing in the cup, Virginia Tech will travel to take on UNC-Charlotte on February 26.
 
SPRING SOCCER CUP FORMAT AND RULES
Each program will participate in three matches in league play prior to arriving in Winston-Salem for the final event. 
 
At the end of the three league matches, the finals matches at Spry Stadium will be determined with the 10 programs being seeded. Shuffling amongst the seeds can be done if a repeat opponent is scheduled.
 
On Sunday, April 10, the tentative schedule is as follow: 

  • Match 1: Spry Soccer Stadium (12 p.m.)
  • Match 2: Spry Training Field 2 (12 p.m.)
  • Match 3: Spry Training Field 1 (2:15 p.m.)
  • Match 4: Spry Soccer Stadium (4:30 p.m.)
  • Match 5: Spry Training Field 2 (4:30 p.m.)

The game clock will count up to 90 minutes with official time being kept on the field. There will be no added time and no re-entry per half. 
 
Three points will be awarded for a win in regulation. If matches remain tied after 90 minutes, the opponents will go directly into penalty kicks with the winning team earning two points and the losing side being awarded one point.
