Virginia Tech student-athletes turn in strong fall semester

BLACKSBURG – Virginia Tech student-athletes finished the Fall 2021 semester on a high note as 414 of Tech's 605 student-athletes earned a semester GPA of 3.0 or greater. As a whole, the department finished the semester with a 3.18 GPA. 
 
The semester continues to build upon a strong academic base for the department as 401 student-athletes now hold a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0, tied for the most in department history following the Fall 2020 semester. The average cumulative GPA across all of Tech's 20* varsity sports now stands at 3.15. 
 
Fall 2021 was a banner year academically after 17 student-athletes finished the term with a cumulative GPA of 4.0, the highest number in Tech history. Also, 18 of the 20 teams earned a semester GPA of 3.0 or higher tying the most in Tech history with the Fall 2020 semester. 
 
Virginia Tech saw 217 of its student-athletes make the Dean's list, which rewards undergraduate students who hold a semester GPA of 3.4 or higher. 
 
From a team GPA perspective, volleyball (3.64) led the way for the semester followed by women's basketball and women's tennis (3.60), women's golf (3.57), men's basketball (3.52), lacrosse (3.48), women's swimming (3.44), women's cross country (3.41), women's soccer (3.37) and men's tennis (3.34). 
 
Overall, 17 of Tech's 20 varsity teams hold a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher following the Fall 2021 semester.

*For academic purposes, the academic staff counts the men's and women's track indoor and outdoor teams as two teams (men/women) instead of four.
