BLACKSBURG -- After dropping two tight contests last week to ranked teams (then-No. 9 Memphis and then-No. 25 Xavier), the Virginia Tech men's basketball team rallied for a 62-58 win against Maryland on Wednesday night.
KEV-AYE ALUMA
Aluma registered his second double-double in three games on Wednesday night, recording 17 points and 12 rebounds – both team highs. That performance was his eighth double-double in a Tech uniform, as the Berlin, Md. native had six last season.
STARTING HOT
Virginia Tech's first bucket of the game has been a three-pointer in five of eight games this season, including the last four in a row. Against Merrimack, Memphis and Xavier, Hunter Cattoor made the first shot, while Nahiem Alleyne started off the scoring against Maine and Maryland.
STRONG ON BOTH ENDS
Tech, which has the nation's second-best scoring defense, held Maryland to 58 points – making last night the seventh game that the Hokies have held their opponent to under 60 points. Virginia Tech also forced 15 turnovers for the fourth time this season.
CLOSE IT OUT
The Hokies outscored the Terps, 31-29, in both halves, but had to come back from a seven-point deficit at one point in the second half. Tech has outscored its opponent in the second half in seven of eight games this season. After taking the lead with 7:02 remaining, the Hokies limited Maryland to only two field goals.
