CHESTNUT HILL, MASS. – Despite a season-high 19 blocks from the Hokie defense, the Virginia Tech volleyball team fell in five sets to Boston College Friday night. The Hokies are now 9-6 and 0-3 in ACC play. The Eagles move to 12-5, 2-1 in the ACC.
The Hokies bounced back after taking a 25-18 loss in set one, winning the next two sets 25-15 and 25-20. During the second set, Tech jumped out to a 7-1 lead, as Cera Powell recorded a kill to prompt a BC timeout. From there, the Hokies were in the driver's seat to finish out the match.
Offensively, the Hokies had 13 kills in the second and third set, hitting .379 in the third set, a match-high. Tech also exploded for seven blocks in the third set, with Anabel Zier leading the way, recording three solo blocks and a block assist. The junior also had three kills.
The fourth set was another battle with four lead changes, but the Eagles ultimately forced a fifth set with a 25-20 win. Brie Postema posted nine assists in the fourth set and also recorded three kills for the Hokies on three attempts.
The two teams were equally matched in the fifth set as the score was even at 11-11. From there, Boston College took control at 14-13 and scored the final two points off of kills from Clare Naughton and Amaka Chukwujekwu, the two offensive leaders. Naughton ended her match with a team-high 17 kills for the Eagles while Chukwujekwu added 10.
For the Hokies, Powell recorded 13 kills and Marisa Cerchio added 12. Cerchio also had seven block assists on the night, as well as Angel Robinson with a solo block and seven block assists. Mosley had a solid night defensively, posting 20 digs for the Hokies.
Virginia Tech continues its road trip on Sunday, taking on Syracuse. First serve is set for 1 p.m.
