BLACKSBURG – The Virginia Tech volleyball team fell in three sets to Notre Dame Sunday afternoon, 25-18, 25-15 and 25-15. Notre Dame records its fifth ACC win of the season, moving to 5-3 and 8-10 overall. Virginia Tech falls to 9-11, 0-8 in the conference.
The Hokies went point-for-point with the Fighting Irish in the first set, as the match was tied up at 14-14. After the media timeout, the Irish used a 4-0 run to take a 19-14 lead. From there, the Irish closed out the set 25-18.
The second and third sets were all Notre Dame, with both sets ending at 25-15. For the Hokies, Griere Hughes ended her match with a team-high eight kills. Cera Powell also added seven. Mara Perry had a solid match defensively, recording nine digs. Talyn Jackson was the primary setter with 24 assists.
Notre Dame's offensive leader was Aubrey Hamilton with 13 kills, hitting .333 on the day. Hattie Monson scooped up 12 digs and Charley Niego had a block solo and block assist, as the Irish finished the match with five total blocks.
The Hokies continue their homestand next weekend, hosting Florida State on Friday, Oct. 22 and Miami on Sunday, Oct. 24. The match vs. Miami will be Virginia Tech's Dig Pink game, as October is breast cancer awareness month. To donate to the cause, visit vthoki.es/DigPink.
