CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The Virginia Tech volleyball team fell to North Carolina in straight sets Sunday afternoon, 25-8, 25-23 and 25-8. The Tar Heels are now 13-4 on the season and 2-4 in ACC play. The Hokies fall to 9-9, 0-6 in conference play.
After falling 25-8 in the first set, Tech battled in the second, jumping out to a 19-15 lead at one point after an ace from Mara Perry. The Hokies could not hold onto it as North Carolina used an 8-1 run to take the lead at 23-21. Virginia Tech battled back but ultimately fell 25-23 in the second.
Cera Powell ended her match with eight kills for the Hokies, with three digs. Marisa Cerchio led the team in hitting percentage, hitting .200 on the day with four kills. Logan Mosley recorded six digs and Brie Postema added 16 assists.
For the Tar Heels, Nia Robinson had a standout performance with 15 kills, hitting .367 on the day. Skyy Howard added six kills and hit .667 on the day. Defensively, Mabrey Shaffmaster had 18 digs and two assists.
The Hokies return to Blacksburg for two straight weekends, opening the home stand with No. 3 Louisville on Friday, Oct. 15 and Notre Dame on Sunday, Oct. 17.
