Hokies end Chattanooga Classic with sweep of Tennessee Tech

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – The Virginia Tech volleyball team ended its weekend with a 3-0 sweep of Tennessee Tech Saturday evening. This is the Hokies second sweep of the season and one of the best matches for the Hokies offensively.
 
Virginia Tech ended the match hitting .368 as a team with 36 total kills. Griere Hughes was the team leader with 10, followed by Angel Robinson and Marisa Cerchio each with six. Tech was also strong at the net with 11 blocks as Tasha Vipond led the charge with eight block assists.
 
Defensively, Logan Mosley ended her day with 12 digs. Mara Perry and Brie Postema each added 15 assists to help out the Hokie attackers.
 
The first set was a 25-15 victory for the Hokies who took the lead at 3-2 and never looked back. Tech's largest lead was 10 points at 22-12 as a kill from Hughes capped a Hokie rally. She led the Hokies in the first set with five kills and three digs.
 
The Hokies dominated the second set, defeating the Golden Eagles 25-11. Using a nine-point run deep in the set, the Hokies secured the victory quickly. Cerchio was key in the run, posting two kills and two block assists.
 
During the third set, Virginia Tech hit .500, a season-high for them. That set saw 14 kills by the Hokies compared to only nine by Tennessee Tech. Vipond got hot for the Hokies in the third, ending the set with four kills and a block assist. Mosley also posted five digs in the third set.
 
Virginia Tech returns home next weekend, hosting the Hokie Invite on Sept. 17-18. Wofford, George Mason and North Carolina A&T will make the trip to Blacksburg to face the Hokies.
