Harper, Hokies outlast Tigers in first ACC Championship challenge

Opens in a new window Box Score (vs. Clemson)

ROME Ga. – A story told many times before reoccurred on Thursday night in the second round of the ACC Championship, as Mitch Harper clinched the 4-2 for Virginia Tech over Clemson.

The Hokies (12-8, 6-6 ACC) put on a clinic in doubles, earning sweeping all three matches and getting an early 1-0 lead over the Tigers (1-14, 2-10).

Alex Ribeiro doubled the lead for Tech with a dominant performance on Court 2, downing his opponent in straight sets, 6-1, 6-3.

In typical Ryan Fishback fashion, the freshman pulled through on Court 6 to add another point for the Virginia Tech, winning 6-2, 7-6.

Mitch Harper lived up to the brand he has built over the course of his career, clinching the win for Tech with a gutsy effort on Court 1. After splitting the first two sets, Harper persevered in the third set, earning a 6-2, 2-6 win.

Virginia Tech will take on No. 4 North Carolina (16-2, 9-2) at 5 p.m. on Friday in the quarterfinals of the ACC Championship.
