No. 17 Hokies preparing for three-game series against Yellow Jackets

BLACKSBURG – Coming off a loss to Liberty, Virginia Tech baseball is preparing to face fellow ACC Coastal opponent Georgia Tech in a three-game series at English Field at Atlantic Union Bank Park starting on Friday with all three games being broadcasted on ACC Network Extra.

The Hokies (19-10, 14-7 ACC) and Jackets (15-13, 12-9) will meet for the first time since March 8, 2020. Georgia Tech leads the all-time series 33-17 and have won four of the last five matchups.

Georgia Tech was the only ACC opponent the Hokies faced in 2020 before having their season cut short due to Covid-19.  

ON THE CALL

The matchup will be broadcast on ACC Network Extra with Jon Laaser (play-by-play) and Andrew Wells (analyst) on the call all weekend, while Bryant Johnson will broadcast on Virginia Tech Sports Network.

LAST TIME OUT

The Hokies struggled against Liberty on Tuesday in Lynchburg only scoring two runs. Virginia Tech posted just six hits on the evening, four of those coming from Gavin Cross and Kevin Madden. Both teams allowed 8 strikeouts on the day while Ryan Metz shined for the Hokies throwing two scoreless innings did not give up a hit.

PLAYER TO WATCH

Gavin Cross was recently named ACC Player of the Week after a standout performance against ETSU and Wake Forest. The freshman hit for the cycle on Tuesday against the Buccaneers and batted .500 (10-for-20) in his last four games and currently leads the ACC in batting average (.400).
