GREENSBORO, N.C. — The 16th-ranked Virginia Tech women's golf team opened the ACC Women's Golf Championship with its best-ever start at the conference tournament, firing rounds of 294 and 289 to garner fourth place through Thursday's 36 holes of competition. The championship is being held at the 6,089-yard, par 72 Sedgefield Country Club.
A pair of Hokies are tied for 10th at even-par 144. Keerattriya Foocharoen and Alyssa Montgomery both signed for level-par rounds. Foocharoen logged back-to-back 72s, while Montgomery posted a 4-under 68 for her second round to move up 21 spot on the leaderboard.
Montgomery's second round was highlighted by a pair of eagles and five birdies. The sophomore nearly recorded an albatross on hole No. 18, her 27th hole of the day, when her approach shot to the par-5 landed in the middle of the green and began tracking toward the hole. It ended within inches of dropping for a 2.
Becca DiNunzio, who is tied for 16th at 1-over 145, led Tech in the morning round, firing a 2-under 70. She and Foocharoen have a team-high eight birdies through 36 holes.
Emily Mahar and Jessica Spicer are tied for 30th and 45th, respectively.
The Hokies have taken advantage of the par-5s, going 16-under-par on those holes.
Third-ranked Wake Forest (565) owns a two-shot edge over second-ranked Duke (567) in the team standings. Fifth-ranked Florida State is in third at 1-over 577, six strokes ahead of Tech.
Duke's Gina Kim leads the individual race at 7-under 137, one shot clear of Florida State's Beatrice Wallin.
Friday's final round of stroke play gets underway at 9 a.m. The top four teams at the conclusion of the final round will advance to match play. The Hokies currently have a seven-shot advantage over Virginia for the coveted last spot. The two rivals, along with North Carolina, will be paired together for the final round.
