Tech falls at Florida State despite Homan’s double-double

TALLAHASSEE – In its second contest in Tallahassee, the Virginia Tech volleyball team could not get it done against Florida State as the Hokies fell 3-1 on Sunday afternoon inside Tully Gym. 

Tech moves to 5-6 on the season and 4-6 in the conference. The Seminoles improve to 10-3 overall and 6-3 in ACC play. Florida State goes a perfect 2-0 on the weekend after defeating No. 14 Notre Dame 3-2 on Friday and then against Tech on Sunday. FSU has now won its last nine outings which is every match during its spring slate. 

The Seminoles found their edge on offense as they had 60 kills on the day compared to Techs 43. Florida State also had six total aces as a team. The Seminoles had three reach double-figures in kills including outside hitters Morgan Chacon (17 kills), Jasmyn Martin (14) and senior Taryn Knuth (12). Setter Olivia Dailey had a near double-double with 29 assists and nine digs. 

As a team, Florida State controlled the pace defensively as it recorded 57 digs versus 46 for the Hokies. FSU also came up with one solo block and 14 block assists. Libero Lauryn Burrows tallied a team-high 10 digs while Dailey and Chacon each added nine digs. 

Outside hitters Kaity Smith and Ashley Homan each recorded double-doubles in the loss to Florida State. Smith went off for 14 kills and 11 digs while Homan tied her season high in kills with 15 along with 12 digs. 

Libero Sarah Jane Lynch had a team-high 13 digs along with one ace on the outing. Setters Brie Postema and Mara Perry each reached double-figures in assists with Postema recording 21 and Perry collecting 16. 


MATCH NOTES 
 

  • Junior Lynch notched a new career high of 13 digs topping her previous career high of 11 last match. 

 

  • Freshman Perry dished out a career-high 16 assists against Florida State. That marks back-to-back outings that Perry has earned a new career high in that category. 

 

  • Setter Postema tallied 21 assists against Florida State and now leads Tech in assists with 182 on the season. 

 

  • Outside hitter Smith now has 29 double-doubles in her career and seven total on the season. 

 

  • Outside hitter Homan recorded her third double-double on the season.

The Hokies will return home to Blacksburg for a pair of matches against Georgia Tech on Friday at 1 p.m. ET and then Syracuse on Sunday at 1 p.m. ET with both matches taking place inside Cassell Coliseum.
