Hokies handle VCU at home

BLACKSBURG – The Virginia Tech women's tennis team earned its first win of the season Saturday afternoon against VCU.

The Hokies came out the gate strong in doubles, grabbing wins on two courts. Seniors Nika Kozar and Elzabet Danailova, the No. 58 duo in the country, looked impressive on Court 1 in their first match together this season, winning 6-2. Freshman Katie Andreini and sophomore Erika Cheng secured the point with a 6-2 result on Court 3.

Tech carried the momentum from doubles into singles play and picked up four wins in the latter competition.

Andreini dominated VCU's Noumea Witmus in straight sets, winning 6-1, 6-1. Freshman Tamara Barad-Itzhaki expanded the Hokies' point total to three with her 6-3, 6-3 victory over Luminita Tutunaru.

Senior Nina Sorkin clinched the win for the Hokies by winning in two tightly-contested sets, 7-5, 7-6(5), against Gabriela Davidescu. Freshman Sabrina Richtrova wrapped up the day for Tech with a victory in three sets over Alessia Ciuca, 6-2, 4-6, 6-2.

Virginia Tech will be back on the floor tomorrow afternoon at 2 p.m. to face Old Dominion at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center.
