BLACKSBURG – Almost 10 months removed from its last competition at the 2020 ACC Championships, Virginia Tech wrestling is back in action 3 p.m. Saturday in Cassell Coliseum to take on Campbell.
To follow the public health guidelines and ensure the safety of Virginia Tech's student-athletes, staff and fans, wrestling will compete without fans in attendance until further notice. Only essential staff and family members of the student-athletes will be allowed in attendance.
The Hokies' first dual of the season can be streamed via ACC Network Extra and fans are welcome to follow @HokiesWrestling on Twitter for updates.
HOKIES VS. FIGHTING CAMELS
- This is the 16th time Tech and Campbell will square off on the mat. The Hokies hold a 15-2 series advantage and have never lost to the Fighting Camels in Blacksburg.
- The Hokies start off the season with six wrestlers ranked in InterMat's preseason rankings to the Fighting Camels' two, including No. 1 Mekhi Lewis and No. 2 Hunter Bolen.
- Tech returns six starters from last season's squad that reached No. 3 in the NWCA Coaches Poll, tying the school record from 2016.
- Last season, the Fighting Camels went 11-2 with their only losses coming to Pitt and Arizona St.
ROBIE ENTERS FOURTH YEAR AT HELM
- Continuing to lead the team to new heights, head coach Tony Robie is back for his fourth full season in charge of the Hokies.
- Robie holds a 34-11 record in his three seasons and a .742 winning percentage that ranks 2nd all-time for Tech coaches lasting at least two seasons.
- On September 25, 2020, Virginia Tech Athletic Director Whit Babcock announced a three-year contract extension for Robie, which keeps him in Blacksburg through 2025.
RETURN OF THE KING
- After taking an Olympic redshirt during the 2019-20 season, 2019 NCAA Champion Mekhi Lewis returns to collegiate wrestling for the 2020-21 season.
- Lewis, voted the 2019 tournament's Most Outstanding Wrestler, is ranked No. 1 in the country by InterMat, FloWrestling and TrackWrestling in their preseason lists.
- The Bound Brook, N.J. native is just the fourth Hokie wrestler to ever receive an InterMat No. 1 ranking, but second in as many years after Hunter Bolen achieved the honor last season.
- Tech's first national champion is back after securing qualification to the 2020 U.S. Olympic Team Trials, which were postponed to the spring of 2021.
MYERS BACK AFTER INJURY
- After missing the entirety of the 2019-20 season due to injury, graduate student Korbin Myers is back for the '20-'21 season after the NCAA granted him a medical redshirt and sixth year of eligibility.
- The three-time NCAA qualifier will look to break into the top eight at the NCAA Championships for the first time of his career.
- The 133-pounder is ranked No. 10 in the country by InterMat to start the season. FloWrestling has him at the eighth-best in the country and TrackWrestling ranked Myers No. 11.
- In his first season of ACC competition in 2018-19, Myers went 3-2 including a victory over Pitt's Micky Phillippi.
