BLACKSBURG - The Virginia Tech women's soccer team returns to action Thursday night when the Hokies welcome No. 2 Florida State to Thompson Field for an ACC matchup that starts at 8 p.m. and will be nationally televised by the ACC Network. Sunday, Tech will play its sixth straight contest against a ranked foe when 14th-ranked Pittsburgh comes to Blacksburg - another nationally televised game (Fox Sports) which kicks off at 3 p.m.
Against the fifth-ranked Seminoles a year ago at Thompson Field (Oct. 10), Tech held an early 1-0 lead on a Molly Feighan goal (10'), tied the match at 2-2 thanks to 78th-miute goal by Allyson Brown, but had just 10 players for the last five minutes of regulation time and both overtime sessions. The Seminoles got the game winner with just 4:11 left on the clock to take the ACC contest 3-2. A season ago in Pittsburgh (Oct. 31), Emmalee McCarter scored directly off a corner kick in the seventh minute and the Hokies held on for a 1-0 victory over the Panthers.

Top Notes for the Hokies (link to Game Notes pdf packet)
The Gauntlet to start 2020
- The Hokies face two more ranked opponents this week, and if one were to back-rank the teams Tech played before the first national poll was announced, it marks six straight contests for the Hokies to start the year.
- Not only have the opponents been ranked, but it's also who the Hokies have faced to start the 2020 season. Since a 2-0 loss at No. 17 Duke on Oct. 2, 2018, Tech is 16-1-2 in matches against teams not named Clemson, Florida State, North Carolina or Virginia.
- Overall, the Hokies are 0-12 in matchups versus the Tigers (0-3), Seminoles (0-1), Tar Heels (0-5) and Cavaliers (0-3), including four of five losses last year - the fifth loss was in the NCAA Tournament to No. 24 Xavier - and all four losses this year.
Facing ranked foes, including six straight
- All-time, Tech is 30-94-14 (138 games - 26.8 win percentage) against ranked foes.
- Under head coach Chugger Adair (10th season), the Hokies are 17-47-8 (29.2), while they were 13-47-6 (24.2) prior.
- Just once in program history, prior to this season, has Tech faced six straight ranked teams. The last time was from Sept. 23-Oct. 17, 2010 - and the Hokies posted a 2-3-1 record.
More on the Hokies versus ranked teams
- The Hokies 1-0 win over No. 6 Virginia in 2018 (Sept. 27) marks the team's last win over a top 10 program and their last win over any ranked team in Blacksburg.
- In 2018, the Hokies were 2-6-1 versus ranked teams, last beating No. 17 Texas (1-0) on the road in the first round of the NCAA Championship, while they were 0-5-1 in 2019.
- In its history, Tech is 11-58-5 against programs ranked in the top 10 and 5-36-3 versus the top 5.
- The Hokies last 11 losses, and 14-of-15, have been to ranked teams (or would have been ranked).
- Tech's last win on the road over a top 10 team was Oct. 24, 2012, at No. 7 Wake Forest (3-0).
