Hokies individuals show strong at Pinehurst

Virginia Tech women's golfer Alyssa Montgomery was the second-lowest among female competitors at the GCAA Pinehurst Amateur individual tournament on Sunday. In all, all four Hokies competing in the tournament finished in the top seven of the female competitors. The two-day event was played at the par 72, 7,053-yard Pinehurst No. 6 course in Pinehurst, North Carolina.
 
Montgomery, a sophomore from Knoxville, Tennessee, posted a three-round total of 6-over 222. She finished tied for 25th overall in the coed event, but trailed only Alice Hodge among the female competitors. Hodge, a freshman at Florida State, tied for 21st overall at 4-over 220. 
 
Becca DiNunzio, a sophomore from Norfolk, Virginia, finished in 28th place overall at 224 and was third among female competitors. Jessica Spicer, a fifth-year student-athlete from Bahama, North Carolina, tied for 32nd overall at 227 and her sister, Sarah Spicer, a redshirt senior from Bahama, North Carolina, tied for 42nd overall at 232. Jessica was fifth among female competitors and Sarah was seventh among the women in the coed tournament. 
 
A.J. Beecher, a junior and East Carolina and a native of Pinehurst, North Carolina, was the overall medalist. He posted an 11-under 205 and finished three strokes ahead of Fulton Smith of Wake Forest and Pinehurst North Carolina and Carson Ownbey of UNC Charlotte.
