FINAL ROUND
Virginia Tech golfer Emily Mahar parred the third playoff hole and defeated Caroline Curtis in the 2020 Golfweek Caledonia Amateur Women's Tournament on Tuesday. The three-day event was played at the 6,123-yard, par 71 Caledonia Golf and Fish Club in Pawleys Island, South Carolina.
Mahar, a native of Brisbane, Australia, shot a 4-under 67 in the final round and tied Curtis, who plays collegiately at Alabama, at the end of 54 holes. The two competitors played the par 4, 383-yard No. 18 for all three playoff holes. Both Mahar and Curtis parred the first two playoff holes, as well as the 18th hole in regulation.
Mahar posted rounds of 71-67-67=205 in the three-day event. On Tuesday, she had six birdies and two bogeys in her round of 67. She led the tournament in Par 4 Scoring, playing 5-under with a 3.81 stroke average. Her 12 birdies in the event was tied for third-best among the 57 players.
Teammate Becca DiNunzio, a sophomore from Norfolk, Virginia, tied for seventh at 2-under 211, also posting a 4-under 67 on Tuesday. Jessica Spicer, a fifth-year player from Bahama, North Carolina, tied for 28th at 219. Spicer was second-best in the event in Par 3 Scoring, playing 2-under on the par 3s with a 2.87 scoring average. DiNunzio was sixth on the Par 3s and tied for third on the Par 5s.

Teammate Jessica Spicer, a fifth-year player from Bahama, North Carolina, is tied for 16that 143 after an even-par 71 on Tuesday. Becca DiNunzio, a sophomore from Norfolk, Virginia, is tied for 19that 144, after she also posted an even-par 71 in the second round. In all, 57 players are currently competing in this individual tournament.

Teammate Jessica Spicer, a fifth-year player from Bahama, North Carolina, is tied for 17th at 72 and Becca DiNunzio, a sophomore from Norfolk, Virginia, is tied for 26th at 73. In all, 58 players are competing in this individual tournament.

Three Virginia Tech women's golfers, Jessica Spicer, Emily Mahar and Becca DiNunzio, will compete in the 2020 Golfweek Caledonia Amateur Women's Tournament beginning on Sunday. The three-day event will be played at the Caledonia Golf and Fish Club in Pawleys Island, South Carolina.
Spicer, from Bahama, North Carolina, will play her final year for the Hokies in 2020-21. The 2019 Virginia Tech Female Student-Athlete of the Year was a 2020 WGCA All-American Scholar and a 2019-20 VaSID Academic All-State selection. She was third on the team in scoring in 2019-20 and finished fourth at the VSGA Women's Stroke Play Championship.
Mahar, from Brisbane, Australia, is in her fourth year at Virginia Tech. She is the program's all-time leader in scoring average and led the Hokies in scoring average in 2019-20. In October, 2019, she won her first individual collegiate event at the Princess Anne Invitational, helping lead the Hokies to the program's first-ever team tournament victory. Mahar advanced to the Round of 32 at the 2020 U.S. Women's Amateur and was the runner-up at 2020 VSGA Women's Stroke Play Championship at Kingsmill, falling to DiNunzio in the second hole of a playoff. She advanced to the Round of 16 in match play at the 2020 North & South Amateur.
DiNunzio, a sophomore from Norfolk, Virginia, started every match in her freshman season. She was named a 2020 WGCA All-American Scholar and posted three Top 20 finishes. DiNunzio won the 2020 VSGA Women's Stroke Play Championship at Kingsmill, defeating Mahar in the second hole of a playoff. She advanced to match play at 2020 North & South Amateur, falling to eventual champion Rachel Kuehn in the Round of 16. DiNunzio finished second in the 2020 Donna Andrews Invitational and finished sixth at the 2020 Golfweek Myrtle Beach Collegiate in the spring.
The trio are all returners for the Hokies this season. The team season will begin in the spring semester, but individual play is allowed during the fall term in accordance with school and Atlantic Coast Conference guidelines.
The players will play a practice round on Saturday, Sept. 12 and competition will begin on Sunday morning. The event will feature three days of 18 holes each day. Live scoring will be available on a link on Hokiesports.com.
