Mahar, a rising senior at Virginia Tech, fell to Kaleigh Telfer in 20 holes. This was Mahar's second appearance in the U.S. Women's Amateur and the first time that she reached match play.

Virginia Tech women's golfer Emily Mahar has advanced to the Round of 32 at the 2020 U.S. Women's Amateur. The tournament is being played at the 6,561-yard, par 72 Woodmont Country Club in Rockville, Maryland.
Mahar, a rising senior at Virginia Tech, defeated Micheala Williams, 1 Up, in the Round of 64 on Thursday. Mahar went 2 Up by winning back-to-back holes on No. 10 and No. 11 and held on for the win by halving the last two holes.
Mahar will face Kaleigh Telfer in the Round of 32 at 7:30 a.m. on Friday morning. If she wins her game on Friday morning, she will advance to the Round of 16, to be played Friday afternoon. After weather from Hurricane Isaias postponed play on Tuesday, the schedule for the event has been backed up one day.
Golf Channel will televise the Round of 16 matches from the tournament from 1-4 p.m. on Friday.
STROKE PLAY RECAP
Virginia Tech women's golfer Emily Mahar had a two-day total of 149 and advanced into match play at the 2020 U.S. Women's Amateur. The tournament is being played at the 6,561-yard, par 72 Woodmont Country Club in Rockville, Maryland.
Mahar, a rising senior at Virginia Tech, tied for 48th place following the two rounds of stroke play this week. The Brisbane, Australia native posted rounds of 73-76=149. The top 64 players from stroke play advanced to match play at the USGA national amateur championship.
Mahar will face Micheala Williams in the Round of 64 at 10:50 a.m. on Thursday morning. If she wins the game on Thursday, she will advance to the Round of 32, to be played Friday morning. After weather from Hurricane Isaias postponed play on Tuesday, the schedule for the event has been back up one day.
Golf Channel will televise live from the tournament from 4-7 p.m. on Thursday.
STROKE PLAY PREVIEW
Virginia Tech women's golfer Emily Mahar has received an exemption and will compete in the 2020 USGA U.S. Women's Amateur Golf Championship. The tournament will be played August 3-9 at the 6,561-yard, par 72 Woodmont Country Club in Rockville, Maryland. This will be Mahar second appearance in the U.S. Women's Amateur.
Mahar, a rising senior at Virginia Tech, won her first collegiate tournament in October 2019 at the Princess Anne Invitational in Virginia Beach, Virginia. In doing so, she helped lead the Hokies to their first-ever team tournament title in their five years of competition. Mahar was named the ACC Women's Golfer of the Month for October 2019 and was an honorable mention Golfweek All-American for the 2019-20 season.
The native of Brisbane, Australia is the Hokies all-time leader in scoring average at 73.52. She led the Hokies in scoring average, rounds of par-or-better and Crunch Time scoring this past season. In the final round of the Princess Anne Invitational, she set a school-record with a 5-under 65. She has also competed in numerous international competitions for her native Australia.
Mahar will begin play in stroke play at the U.S. Women's Amateur on Monday afternoon at 1:37 p.m. She will be grouped with Stanford's Rachel Heck and Ole Miss' Kennedy Swann. The trio will tee off at 9:37 a.m. on Tuesday.
The event had its field cut from 156 players to 132 competitors this year due to the pandemic. There will be 36 holes of stroke play (18 holes on both Monday and Tuesday). The low 64 scored will advance to match play, beginning Wednesday morning. If necessary, a playoff will determine the low 64 from stroke play.
Golf Channel is scheduled to broadcast 15 hours of live uninterrupted action presented by Rolex from the 120th U.S. Women's Amateur Championship from Aug. 5-9. The broadcast will kick off NBC Sports' new partnership with the USGA. The coverage commences with the Round of 64 on Wednesday, Aug. 5 and concludes with the 36-hole final on Sunday, Aug. 9, of which the afternoon 18 will be broadcast live.
