BLACKSBURG – Matt Brown of The Athletic posted a comprehensive look at college football's most dominant programs of the past 50 years based on 23 different categories from 1970 to 2019. Virginia Tech came in at No. 23 on that list. Here's what Brown had to say about the Hokies …

23. Virginia Tech
Record: 372-227-5 (.620)
Average: 24.48
Score: 24.48

The Hokies were a middling program playing middling independent schedules for the first 20 years of this window. They spent a total of one week ranked in the AP poll from 1970-1992 — 20th after winning the Peach Bowl in 1986. Frank Beamer brought Virginia Tech to prominence in the Big East in the 1990s, and the Hokies lost the BCS title game in 1999 and won at least 10 games each of their first eight years in the ACC from 2004-2011. Virginia Tech actually ranks seventh in percentage of games against ranked opponents won by double digits, but when all 50 years are taken together, it's held back by the extended down periods and ranks just 45th in wins and winning percentage against top-10 foes.
