Tech wraps up Ohio State Invite on Saturday

COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Virginia Tech men's and women's swimming and diving team wrapped up the Ohio State Invite on Saturday, placing 45 into the evening finals, recording 17 top-10 finishes at McCorkle Pavilion in Columbus, Ohio.
 
During the morning session, freshman AJ Pouch recorded an Olympic trial cut time in the LCM prelim session, posting a time of 2:16.61 in the 200 breaststroke.
 
HOKIES MEN
The 1650 started the afternoon at the Ohio State Invite where Tech was led by Filippo Dal Maso who finished third overall in the event, turning in an NCAA B cut time of 15:07.24. He was joined in the top-10 by Brennen Doss who also had a B cut with a 15:25.76 to place seventh.
 
Lane Stone took fifth in the 200 backstroke with a time of 1:46.34. Freshman Forest Webb came in ninth posting a time of 1:48.33. Sam Tornqvist qualified for the B finals after the morning session, but finished at the top of the heat with an NCAA B cut of 1:42.27.
 
In the 100 freestyle, Thomas Hallock notched an NCAA B cut time of 43.69 to finish seventh. Pouch had a NCAA B cut time of 1:57.37 to finish third in the 200 breaststroke while Simon Shi came in ninth with a 2:01.06.
 
Antani Ivanov was the top finisher for the Hokies on the day as he claimed first in the 200 butterfly, finishing with a B cut time of 1:43.01. Freshman Ryan Vipavetz added a ninth-place 1:49.46 in the fly.
 
The Hokies wrapped up the invitational in the 400 free, placing fifth as Hallock, Henry Claesson, Dal Maso and Stone posted a time of 2:57.26.
 
Tech did not compete in men's platform diving.
 
HOKIES WOMEN
Freshman Brooke Travis was the top finisher for the Hokies in the 1650 free, placing 11th overall with a time of 16:41.21.
 
Tech had a pair of top-10 finishes in the 200 backstroke with Emily Meilus placing sixth in a time of 1:57.55. Her teammate Margarita Ryan finished just behind in 1:57.56.
 
Baillie Cameron took 10th in the 200 butterfly, turning in a time of 2:18.58. Freshman Julia Smith came in 16th, turning in a 2:17.77.
 
In the 200 butterfly, Morgan Miller finished just outside the top-10, taking the top spot in the B finals to finish 11th with a time of 2:00.51. Molly Sheffield came in 16th in a time of 2:03.11.
 
The Hokies wrapped up swim events finishing fifth in the 400 free relay with a time of 3:18.71 off swims from Joelle Vereb, Julia Bruneau, Kayla Purcell and Sarah Shackelford.
 
In platform diving, Izzi Mroz led the way finishing sixth with a score of 206.05. Teagan Moravek added a ninth-place finish with 199.35 while Brooke Leftwich was 10th (197.65).
 
The Hokies will be back in the pool for the final meet before the holiday break, traveling to Atlanta, Georgia for the US Open Championships – Dec. 4-7.

COLUMBUS, Ohio
– The Virginia Tech swimming and diving team recorded three Olympic Trial Cut Times, placed 47 into the evening finals and had 22 top-10 finishes during the second day of competition at McCorkle Pavilion in Columbus, Ohio.
 
In the morning LCM session, Margarita Ryan hit the Olympic Trial Qualifying cut for the first time in the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:02.64. Joelle Vereb again reached the trial cut in the 100 breaststroke and recorded her second of the weekend with a 1:10.90, while Lane Stone again hit the mark in the 200 freestyle with a 1:50.72.
 
HOKIES MEN
In the evening SCY finals session, Sam Tornqvist led the way, taking the top spot in the 100 backstroke as he posted an NCAA B cut time of 47.12. Freshman Forest Webb joined him in the A finals, finishing seventh with a 49.03.
 
The Hokies opened the evening with a fifth-place finish in the 200 medley relay as Tornqvist, Simon Shi, Antani Ivanov and Thomas Hallock put up a time of 1:27.84.
 
Antani Ivanov followed up with a third-place finish in the 100 fly, posting a B cut of 47.27. Filippo Dal Maso continued his strong start to the season, finishing second in the 400 IM as he turned in a B cut of 3:49.28.
 
In the 200 free, Lane Stone came in fifth with an NCAA B cut of 1:35.59 while Ivanov posted 1:38.74 to finish ninth. The Hokies had two more A finalists in the 100 breaststroke led by freshman AJ Pouch's 55.01 to finish seventh. Simon Shi finished just behind in eighth with 55.03.
 
The Hokies closed out the swim events with two top-10 finishes in the 800 free relay. Dal Maso, Ivanov, Tornqvist and Stone came in third with 6:30.92. In ninth was the quartet of Ryan Vipavetz, Justin Rich, Brennen Doss and Henry Claesson in 6:41.90.
 
Tech also had a pair of top-10 finishes in the men's 3-meter as freshmen Joseph Perreault and Taj Cole placed sixth (300.40) and seventh (295.80), respectively.
 
HOKIES WOMEN
Joelle Vereb continued her strong weekend as she took the top spot in the 100 butterfly during the SCY evening session, turning in a B cut time of 52.32. Kayla Purcell also had a B cut in the event, finishing fifth with a time of 53.66 while Molly Sheffield came in 10th with a 54.91.
 
The Hokies opened the evening with a fourth-place finish in the 200 medley relay behind Ryan, Vereb, Purcell and Sarah Shackelford's 1:40.15.
 
Vereb added a second-place finish in the 100 breaststroke as she posted a time of 1:00.42 for an NCAA B cut. Baillie Cameron came in ninth with 1:02.28. Ryan finished the evening finals in the 100 backstroke with a ninth-place 54.69.
 
The Hokies wrapped up the evening swim events finishing eighth in the 800 free as Brooke Travis, Ryan, Morgan Miller and Loulou Vos turned in a time of 7:22.28.
 
On the boards, Teagan Moravek took sixth in 1-meter with a score of 254.30.
 
The team also swam a time trial in the 200 free relay with Vereb, Shackelford, Purcell and Anna Landon posting a time of 1:30.30. It moves them into fifth on the Virginia Tech record book top-times list. Vereb's leadoff time of 22.17 gives her the number two spot on the 50 free list behind Sara Smith's 21.96 set in 2009. 
 
Tech will conclude the Ohio State Invite on Saturday with the morning's LCM session beginning at 8 a.m. The 1650 free will begin at 4 p.m. with the SCY final session set to start at 6:30 p.m.

COLUMBUS, Ohio –
The Virginia Tech men's and women's swimming and diving teams had solid opening day on Thursday at the Ohio State Invitational at McCorkle Pavilion in Columbus, Ohio.
 
Joelle Vereb and Thomas Hallock led the teams on the day as both recorded U.S. Olympic Trial qualifying times in the 50 free during the LCM morning session. The two turned in second place finishes in the same event during the evening's SCY finals.
 
HOKIES MEN
Virginia Tech advanced 24 into the evening finals on the men's side, including eight into the A heat.
 
The Hokies opened the evening session, placing seventh in the 200 free relay as Hallock, Henry Claesson, Sam Tornqvist and Lane Stone posted a 1:21.07.
 
Tech followed up with the 500 free where Filippo Dal Maso led the way, finishing fourth with a time of 4:20.72. Antani Ivanov placed just behind in fifth (4:22.44) while Lane Stone was ninth (4:27.07). Dal Maso and Ivanov had NCAA B cut times in the event.
 
In the 200 IM, Tornqvist posted a third-place time of 1:46.74 to get an NCAA B cut. Simon Shi was eighth in 1:48.88 and Dylan Eichberg came in 10th with a 1:50.88
 
Hallock, who recorded an Olympic Trial cut of 22.99 during the morning, followed up with a second-place 19.81 in the evening's SCY finals. The time hits the NCAA B cut mark. Claesson added a 10th-place 20.60 in the event.
 
The Hokies wrapped up the evening swim events in the 400 medley relay with a fifth-place 3:12.29 from Tornqvist, Shi, Ivanov and Hallock.
 
On the 1-meter boards, the Hokies were led by a pair of freshman. Taj Cole placed seventh with 296.60 and Joseph Perreault came in ninth with a tally of 265.70.
 
HOKIES WOMEN
Joelle Vereb led the Hokies on the day as she posted an Olympic Trial cut of 25.91 during the morning's 50 free LCM. In the evening's SCY finals of the same event, the junior finished second with an NCAA B cut time of 22.50. It also moves her into fourth on Virginia Tech's top-times list.
 
The Hokies opened the evening's finals session with a fourth-place finish in the 200 free relay as Vereb, Julia Bruneau, Sarah Shackelford and Anna Landon turned in a 1:31.31.
 
In the 500 free, Tech placed two in the B finals with freshman Brooke Travis claiming 12th with a time of 4:49.43. Loulou Vos posted a time of 4:54.01 to finish 17th in the event.
 
While Vereb was in the A finals of the 50 free, Bruneau and Shackelford placed in the B finals. Bruneau finished 15th in 23.23 while Shackelford went 23.52 for 19th.
 
Tech wrapped up the swim events with a sixth-place 3:38.37 in the 400 medley relay off swims from Margarita Ryan, Vereb, Kayla Purcell and Shackelford.
 
In diving, the women competed in 3-meter and were led by Izzi Mroz who finished eighth with a score of 257.10. Brooke Leftwich placed just outside the top-10 with a 261.65 to come in 11th.
 
Tech will be back in the pool for the prelims at 10 a.m. on Friday monrning. The day will again be split into LCM prelims and SCY finals.
