RALEIGH, N.C. – While the team was in Ohio taking down the No. 3 Buckeyes, Virginia Tech wrestling had five wrestlers place in the 2019 Wolfpack Wrestling Club Open Sunday afternoon at NC State. Tech sent 14 wrestlers to the open tournament, nine of which competed unattached.
Freshman Bryce Andonian was the only Hokie to reach the finals of his bracket. Andonian went 4-1 with one major decision and two pins, including a 58 second fall, to finish second at 149 pounds. Sam Latona, coming off his first-place finish at the Southeast Open, finished third at 125 pounds after going 4-1 with two major decision victories and a tech fall. Both Andonian and Latona competed unattached.
Cole Rhone, Cody Howard and Connor Brady were the other three Tech placers. Rhone, unattached, finished fourth at 133 pounds after going 2-2, winning both of his matches by fall. Howard, competing for Virginia Tech at 197 pounds, also finished fourth after a 2-2 tournament. Brady, unattached, placed fifth at 157 pounds despite going 5-1 with two major decision victories and a pin.
Other Notables:
- Hunter Graf went 4-2 at 125 pounds. Graf had three major decision wins and a pin in one minute exactly.
- Brandon Wittenberg (unattached) also went 4-2 at 125 pounds. Wittenberg had two pins, including one in 1:10, and a tech fall at the open.
- Kristian Scott finished 2-2 at 165 pounds and had a 15-0 tech fall.
- Dan Mancini (unattached) competed at 157 pounds and went 2-2 with a pin and a tech fall.
- Jack Darling (unattached) went 2-2 at 141 pounds including a 12-1 major decision.
