Virginia Tech women's golfer Emily Mahar has been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Women's Golfer of the Month for October.
Mahar, a junior from Brisbane, Australia, won her first collegiate event while leading the Hokies to the co-championship at the Princess Anne Invitational on Oct. 6. She posted a 1-under 69 in each of the first two rounds and followed that with a career-best and Virginia Tech women's golf program record of 5-under 65 in Sunday's final round. The win marked the first-ever team tournament title in the program's four-plus years of competition.
Mahar, the Hokies' all-time leading scorer, finished in the top 11 of three of the four fall events, including the win at Virginia Beach and a seventh-place finish at Battle at the Beach. Her 71.00 stroke average is the program's best-ever in any semester and she has been par-or-better in eight of her 11 rounds this fall. She us currently ranked 62nd in Golfstat and has helped lead the Hokies to their highest-ever ranking of 21st in Golfstat. She becomes the first Virginia Tech women's golfer to earn the accolade.
This past weekend, she represented her native Australia in the Spirit International Amateur Golf Championship in Texas. She finished tied for 22nd individually and the Australian women's team finished 12th and the combined men's and women's team from Australia tied for ninth overall.
