CARY, NC. – The Virginia Tech women's tennis team fell to Miami, 4-1 during the second round of the 2019 ACC Women's Tennis Championship on Thursday afternoon at Cary Tennis Park.
The Hokies were able to pick up the doubles point behind a big upset victory on court one. No. 78 Natalie Novotna and Rita Pinto teamed up to take down Miami's No. 16 ranked Daniella Roldan and Daevenia Achong, 6-2. Samantha Gillas and Elizabet Danailova picked up the win on court three, 7-5 to secure the doubles point.
In singles, the Hurricanes moved to a 3-1 lead after securing three matches in straight sets.
The Hokies continued to battle with Samantha Gillas taking the match on court three to a third set. After giving up the first 6-3 to Yuna Ito, the Hokies freshman came back to win the second in a tiebreak 7-6(5). In the final set, Ito was able to clinch the win for the 'Canes taking the set 6-3.
On court two, Nika Kozar was battling in a third set and was up 7-6(4), 3-6, 4-3 at the time the match was decided. Elizabet Danailova was also in a third after winning the first 7-5, but gave up the second 6-2. Danailova trailed 5-4 when the match was called.
