BLACKSBURG – U.S. Under-23 Women's National Team head coach B.J. Snow named a 24-player roster for the 2019 Thorns Spring Invitational where the USA will face Reign FC, Portland Thorns FC and the Chicago Red Stars in the four-team NWSL pre-season competition.
Tech rising-senior Mandy McGlynn is one of two goalkeepers called into the camp, which features 21 collegiate players, two professional players and one US. Soccer Development Academy player. McGlynn, who played with the USA's 2018 FIFA Under-20 Women's World Cup Team, is one of 10 players from that team in this camp.
"I knew that the next step in my process was trying to make the U-23 National Team since I did age out of the U-20 group," McGlynn said. "I just kept training and kept my eye on the next invitational and I was hoping that my name would be on it – and it was. I'm very excited for the opportunity and to work with a larger pool of age groups and, after seeing the roster, which had players I've played with and some that I haven't, it'll be a good experience to see different styles of play from those new players."
The U.S. Under-23s are taking part in Thorns Spring Invitational for the third year in a row and all the matches will take place at Merlo Field on the campus of the University of Portland. The competition will take place over three match days.
The USA opened against Reign FC on Sunday, while the second match day is set for Wednesday, March 27, with the USA taking on Portland at 10:30 p.m. EST. The U.S. finishes against the Red Stars on Saturday, March 30 at 4:30 p.m. EST.
"B.J. Snow is the U-23 coach. I haven't worked with him before, so I'm excited to get to know him and start a relationship with him," McGlynn said. "It's a goal of mine to eventually be on the full team and any step I can take to get myself closer is an accomplishment. I'm obviously not going to settle at this point in my life, I want to be in future camps, whether that's U-23s or with the full team. I'm just going to take every opportunity with any national team that I get called into to prove that I can stay in the pool and hopefully it will work out to making the full team one day."
