Men’s tennis hosts Virginia Tech Invitational

BLACKSBURG – The Virginia Tech men's tennis team is set to host the Virginia Tech Invitational January 19-21 beginning at 10 a.m. on Saturday at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center. Tech will be joined by Penn State, Middle Tennessee and William & Mary.

THE SET-UP
The tournament will crown first, second and third place finishes at the end of the weekend with scoring based on a points system. Players who win at the one will be awarded eight points with it continuing to decrease down to those who win at the eight being awarded one point. At the end of the competition the scores will be tallied to determine an overall winner. There will be NO head-to-head team scoring in this event.
 
THE HOKIES
Virginia Tech is coming off of two wins to open 2019. The Hokies swept Boston University 7-0 and followed with a 6-1 win over Charleston in a doubleheader played on Thursday.
 
Entering into the new season the Hokies have three players ranked in the ITA singles standings with Mitch Harper at 26th, Jason Kros is 30th and Henrik Korsgaard comes in at 118th. Tech also has a pair of doubles teams in the rankings. Harper along with Carlo Donato is 42nd while Korsgaard and Alex Ribeiro are 43rd.
 
THE FIELD – RANKED
Penn State brings the top-ranked doubles team in the nation into BBTC this weekend with Constant de la Bassetiere and Gabriel Nemeth. The pair were in Blacksburg during the fall when they claimed the ITA Atlantic Region doubles title before advancing to ITA Nationals where they won the consolation bracket.
 
Middle Tennessee's Gonzalo Morell Raschiatore is ranked No. 119 in the singles standings. He finished as runner-up at the ITA Ohio Valley Regional in the fall, earning a bid to the ITA Nationals.
