Tech student-athletes participate in fall commencment

BLACKSBURG – Virginia Tech held its fall commencement ceremony Friday at Cassell Coliseum, and 21 Virginia Tech student-athletes earned their diplomas.
 
The group included eight football football players, with one of them – Kyle Chung – receiving a second undergraduate degree in sociology. Joining Chung among the football graduates were defensive linemen Darius Fullwood (management) and Vinny Mihota (mathematics), and offensive linemen Braxton Pfaff (human development), Demetri Moore (sociology), Yosuah Nijman (consumer studies), D'Andre Plantin (criminology and sociology) and Tyrell Smith (criminology).
 
The contingent also included two prominent basketball players, as both Kerry Blackshear Jr. (public relations) and Justin Robinson (communications studies) graduated. The two of them will participate in the spring commencement ceremony, as the Hokies left Friday for Atlantic City, New Jersey to compete in the Boardwalk Classic against Washington.
 
Four track and field student-athletes graduated, including James Carver (biology), Greg Chiles (consumer studies), Shanel Burr (sociology) and Ama-Selina Tchume (residential environments and design). Four baseball players graduated – Connor Coward (marketing), Joe Freiday (criminology), Andrew McDonald (mechanical engineering) and Payton Holdsworth.
 
Also, women's soccer player Jen Boyles (biology), diver Mauro Castro-Silva (marketing) and volleyball standout Rhegan Mitchell (human nutrition, foods and exercise) graduated.
