Virginia Tech golfer Connor Johnson Jr. has been named the Junior Boy's Golfer of the Year by the Virginia State Golf Association.
The freshman from Richmond, Virginia was selected for his 2018 on-course accomplishments. In June, he won the 66th VSGA Junior Stroke Play Championship at Pete Dye River Course of Virginia Tech, his future home college course. Johnson was the only player to shoot three rounds in the 60s and posted a three-day 204 to win by two strokes over Matthew Monastero. In April, Johnson and Virginia Tech teammate Drew Brockwell won the fifth MAPGA/VSGA Junior Four-Ball Championship, held at Ford's Colony Country Club's Marsh Hawk Course in Williamsburg.
He was the stroke-play medalist at the VSGA Junior Match Play Championship for the second straight year and qualified for the VSGA Amateur Championship and made the cut at the Delta Dental State Open of Virginia. He went 2-1 at the Virginias-Carolinas Junior Boys' Matches, winning his singles match 5 and 4.
For the Hokies, Johnson ranked third on the team in the fall season in stroke average, 72.67, and played in all 15 rounds. He recorded two top-10 finishes and posted a low round of 66 in the first round of the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate. He had a team-best of eight rounds par-or-better and was third on the team in "Crunch Time" scoring, at 71.60.
The Hokies begin the spring season Feb. 17-19, as they compete in the Puerto Rico Classic. The three-day event will be played at the River Course of the Rio Mar Country Club in Rio Mar, Puerto Rico.
