Kros falls to nation’s No. 1 in quarterfinals at ITA Nationals

SURPRISE, Ariz. – Virginia Tech men's tennis team wrapped up the fall slate as Jason Kros fell in the quarterfinals at the 2018 ITA Fall Nationals in Surprise, Arizona.
 
Kros advanced past Texas' Yuya Ito in the round of 16 after the Longhorn player withdrew. That pitted the Hokies senior against the nation's top-ranked player, Wake Forest's Petros Chrysochos.
 
The two battled it out with Kros holding a 4-2 advantage in aces, but Chrysochos was able to hold 3-1 on break points. Chrysochos used it to his benefit as he secured the match 6-4, 6-3.
 
Virginia Tech wraps up the fall slate and will be back on the court mid-January.

DAY TWO
SURPRISE, Ariz. – 
Virginia Tech's Jason Kros advanced into the sweet 16 round on Thursday at the 2018 ITA Fall National Championships in Surprise, Arizona.
 
Kros, ranked 117th in the ITA, squared off against No. 104 Logan Smith of USC. The Tech senior won the first set 6-4, but Smith answered to take the second 6-1. In the final set, Kros rolled to the win as he swept it 6-0. In the next round, Kros is set to face No. 29 Yuya Ito of Texas.
 
Tech's Mitch Harper faltered against another Longhorn, falling to No. 54 Christian Sigsgaard 7-5, 6-2. 
 
The Hokies Henrik Korsgaard and Alex Ribeiro also fell in doubles at the hands of upset-minded UNC Asheville's Oli Nolan and Henry Patten. The Bulldogs pair had pulled off the first-round win over Ohio State's No. 29 pair before holding on to defeat the Hokies 7-5, 7-5. 
 
Kros will be back on the court Friday.

DAY ONE
SURPRISE, Ariz. – 
All four members of the Virginia Tech men's tennis team advanced on Wednesday at the 2018 ITA Fall National Championships in Surprise, Arizona.
 
Mitch Harper, ranked 12th in the ITA preseason, got the day started with the win over Cal's freshman Yuta Kikuchi. Harper claimed the first set 6-4, but the Kikuchi responded with a 6-1 win in the second. The Tech senior came back strong to win the third 6-4. Kikuchi is currently unranked in singles, but is the tabbed as a top-10 newcomer this season. 
 
The second Tech win of the day came from No. 117 Jason Kros who had the big win as he knocked off the nation's No. 38 Emil Reinberg from Georgia. In the first set, Kros and Reinberg battled going into an exciting tiebreak, but the Tech senior held on to win it 7-6(8). Kros rolled in the second set, securing the win 6-3. 
 
Tech also got the win in doubles as No. 12 Henrik Korsgaard and Alex Ribeiro paired up for the opening round. The duo defeated the Mountain Regional champion tandem of Tim Handel and Reuben Montano of Northern Arizona. The two teams kept it close, but the Hokies pair ultimately held on to win it in straight sets with scores of 7-5, 7-5. 
 
Harper will face Texas' 54th-ranked Christian Sigsgaard in the next round while Kros is set to face USC's No. 104 Logan Smith. Korsgaard and Ribeiro will pair up against UNC Asheville's Oli Nolan and Henry Patten. The Bulldogs pair had the upset win over Ohio State's No. 29 Martin Joyce and Hunter Tubert. 
 
Tech will be back on the court Thursday for the next round of singles and doubles.
