Keera Foocharoen wins individual title at Alexa Stirling Intercollegiate

FINAL ROUND

The Virginia Tech women's golf team posted a three-round total of 889 and finished in third place at the Alexa Stirling Intercollegiate on Sunday afternoon. The three-day event was played at the par 72, 6,210-yard Atlanta Athletic Club in Johns Creek, Georgia.
 
Keera Foocharoen, a freshman from Bangkok, Thailand, won medalist honors to lead the Hokies. She finished with a three-round total of 4-under 212 and defeated runner-up Lauren Hartlage of host Louisville by three strokes.
 
Foocharoen carded identical 2-under 70 in both rounds on Saturday and shot an even-par 72 in Sunday's final round to secure the title. With the win, she becomes the second Virginia Tech women's golfer to win an individual title in the program's three-and-a-half year history. Current teammate Elizabeth Bose won the 2018 Hurricane Invitational last spring.
 
Friday's opening round was delayed more than three hours due to inclement weather in the Atlanta area, but Saturday's second round was played on time, as was Sunday's final round. The Hokies shot a 292 on Friday and followed that with a 294 on Saturday. Tech shot a 303 on Sunday.
 
Jessica Spicer, a junior from Bahama, North Carolina, tied for 17th at 226 and Amanda Hollandsworth, a graduate student from Floyd, Virginia, tied for 25th at 228. Bose, a senior from Norfolk, Virginia, tied for 32nd at 230 and Emily Mahar, a sophomore from Brisbane, Australia, tied for 35th at 231.
 
Host Louisville won the tournament with an 882, one stroke ahead of Auburn and seven strokes ahead of the Hokies. Indiana was fourth at 896, Kennesaw State was fifth at 905, Georgia was sixth at 907 and East Carolina was seventh at 913. Mercer was eighth at 915, Coastal Carolina was ninth at 922, Georgia State was 10th at 941 and Dartmouth was 11th at 948.
 
This was the final event of the fall semester for the Hokies. Tech returns to action in 2019, as they compete in the Puerto Rico Classic in San Juan, Puerto Rico Feb. 10-12.

DAY TWO

Spicer shot even-par 72 in each round of the tournament and is alone in third place. The two 70s are the lowest rounds of Foocharoen's young collegiate career.
 
Amanda Hollandsworth, a graduate student from Floyd, Virginia, is tied for 18th at 150 and Elizabeth Bose, a senior from Norfolk, Virginia, is tied for 24th at 152. Emily Mahar, a sophomore from Brisbane, Australia, is tied for 39th at 156.
 
Louisville continues to lead the tournament, at 584, two strokes ahead of the Hokies. Auburn is third at 593, Georgia is fourth at 594, Indiana is fifth at 595 and East Carolina is sixth at 603. Kennesaw State is seventh at 605, Mercer is eighth at 616, Coastal Carolina is ninth at 624, Dartmouth is 10th at 630 and Georgia State is 11th at 631.
 
The final round will be played on Sunday. Tech will be grouped with Louisville and Auburn on Saturday and will begin play from the first tee beginning at 9:30 a.m.

Keera Foocharoen, a freshman from Bangkok, Thailand, leads the Hokies. She shot a 2-under 70 and is in second place after the first round, four shots behind leader Lauren Hartlage of host Louisville. Foocharoen's 70 is the lowest round of her young collegiate career.
 
Jessica Spicer, a junior from Bahama, North Carolina is tied for fifth place at even-par 72 and Elizabeth Bose, a senior from Norfolk, Virginia, is tied for 13th at 74. Amanda Hollandsworth, a graduate student from Floyd, Virginia, is tied for 24th at 76 and Emily Mahar, a sophomore from Brisbane, Australia, is tied for 33rd at 77.
 
Louisville leads the tournament at 2-under 286, six strokes ahead of the Hokies. Auburn is third at 294, Georgia is fourth at 299 and East Carolina and Indiana are tied for fifth at 303. Kennesaw State is seventh at 304, Mercer is eighth at 306, Coastal Carolina is ninth at 308, Dartmouth is 10th at 313 and Georgia State is 11th at 317.
 
The second round will be played on Saturday and the third round on Sunday. Local weather is expected to improve each of the next two days. Tech will be grouped with Louisville and Auburn on Saturday and will begin play from the first tee beginning at 9:30 a.m.
