Hokies finish fifth at BOT Intercollegiate

FINAL ROUND

The Virginia Tech men's golf team posted a score of 19-under 845 and finished in fifth place at the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate on Sunday afternoon. The three-day tournament was played at the par 72, 7,147-yard, Blackthorn Club at the Ridges in Jonesborough, Tennessee this weekend.
 
The Hokies entered the day tied for fifth at 11-under 565, after a 286 on Friday and a 279 on Saturday. Tech posted an 8-under 280 on Sunday, tied for the second-best round of the final day.
 
Connor Johnson Jr., a freshman from Richmond, Virginia, led the Hokies individually. He tied for sixth at 10-under 206, his best 54-hole total of his young career. Johnson was par-or-better in all three rounds and his 68 on Sunday included six birdies. He finished five strokes behind medalist Simon Zach of Louisville.

Slade Pickering, a sophomore from North West, South Africa, completed his best collegiate tournament on Sunday. He followed Saturday's career-best 66 with a 67 on Sunday. He finished in ninth place at 9-under 207. His 67 on Sunday included seven birdies and an eagle 3 on the par 5, 517-yard No. 14, Tech's third eagle on that hole this weekend.
 
Connor Burgess, a sophomore from Lynchburg, Virginia, tied for 32nd at 215 and Drew Brockwell, a freshman from Chesterfield, Virginia, tied for 49th at 219. Joey Jordan, a senior from Richmond, Virginia, is in 71st place at 153. Bradley de Beer, a freshman from Western Cape, South Africa, played the event as an individual. He tied for 49th with a 219, including a 3-under 69 in Sunday's final round.
 
Host East Tennessee State won the team title at 32-under 832, one stroke ahead of Louisville and three strokes ahead of Tennessee. Kent State was fourth at 839, six strokes ahead of the Hokies. Coastal Carolina was sixth at 847, Missouri was seventh at 852, East Carolina was eighth at 856 and UNC Wilmington was ninth at 857. Penn State was 10th at 858, Virginia was 11th at 862, VCU was 12th at 869, Furman was 13th at 870 and Villanova was 14th at 891.
 
The Hokies wrap up the fall portion of the 2018-19 season on Oct. 28-20, as they travel to Greensboro, North Carolina to compete in the UNCG Grandover Classic. The two-day event will be played at the Grandover Resort's East Course.


SECOND ROUND

The three-day tournament is being played at the par 72, 7,147-yard, Blackthorn Club at the Ridges in Jonesborough, Tennessee.
 
The Hokies entered the day tied for eighth after a 2-under 286 on Friday. Tech followed that with a 9-under 279 on Saturday. The 279 was tied for the third-best round of the day. All four counting rounds for the Hokies in the second round were par-or-better.
 
Connor Johnson Jr., a freshman from Richmond, Virginia, leads the Hokies individually. He is tied for eighth at 6-under 138. He trails leader Shiso Go of East Tennessee State by seven strokes.

Slade Pickering, a sophomore from North West, South Africa, recorded a new career-low round with a 6-under 66 on Saturday. He is tied for 19th at 140. Connor Burgess, a sophomore from Lynchburg, Virginia, is tied for 34th at 143 and Drew Brockwell, a freshman from Chesterfield, Virginia, is tied for 48th at 146. Joey Jordan, a senior from Richmond, Virginia, is in 77th place at 153. Pickering's 66 on Saturday ties Johnson for the lowest round of the year to date for the Hokies. Johnson carded his 66 in Friday's first round of the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate. Bradley de Beer, a freshman from Western Cape, South Africa, is playing the event as an individual. He is tied for 66th with a 150.
 
Host East Tennessee State leads the event at 27-under 549, two strokes ahead of Kent State and six strokes ahead of Tennessee. Louisville is fourth at 556, nine strokes ahead of the Hokies and Tigers. Coastal Carolina is seventh at 567, East Carolina is eighth at 572, Virginia is ninth at 573 and UNC Wilmington is 10th at 574. Penn State is 11th at 576, VCU is 12th at 577, Furman is 13th at 578 and Villanova is 14th at 595.

Connor Johnson Jr., a freshman from Richmond, Virginia, carded a 6-under 66 and is tied for third place individually. He trails leaders Simon Zach of Louisville and Shiso Go of East Tennessee State by three strokes. Zach and Go tied the tournament record with his 9-under 63, set last year by Go. Johnson's 66 set a new career low for him and is the lowest round of the season by any Hokie golfer.

Drew Brockwell, a freshman from Chesterfield, Virginia and Connor Burgess, a sophomore from Lynchburg, Virginia, each shot 73s and are tied for 40th place. Slade Pickering, a sophomore from North West, South Africa, is tied for 51st at 74 and Joey Jordan, a senior from Richmond, Virginia, is in 81st place with an 82. Johnson and Jordan each eagled the par 5, 517-yard No. 14.
 
Bradley de Beer, a freshman from Western Cape, South Africa, is playing the event as an individual. He shot an opening round 70 and is tied for 22nd place. This is his official collegiate debut, as he was on the course at the VCU Invitational when the event was canceled due to severe weather.
 
Host East Tennessee State leads the event at 18-under 270, six strokes ahead of Kent State and seven strokes ahead of Louisville and Tennessee. Missouri is fifth at 281, UNC Wilmington is sixth at 282 and VCU is seventh at 284, two strokes ahead of the Hokies, Pirates and Chanticleers. Virginia is 11th at 289, Furman is 12th at 290, Penn State is 13th at 294 and Villanova is 14th at 299.
