Tech cross country teams back to the course Friday

BLACKSBURG – The Virginia Tech cross country teams are back in action Friday when both squads compete at the Penn State National Open held on the Penn State Blue/White Golf Courses in State College, Pennsylvania.
 
The meet marks the final one for the Hokies before the ACC Championship held in Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts on Oct. 26.
 
Twenty-eight teams will be competing at the Penn State National Open, including six teams from the ACC. The Virginia Tech men's team, ranked No. 30 in the latest United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association poll, will be one of six ranked teams in the event. There will be five ranked teams on the women's side.
 
Tech's squads last competed almost two weeks ago when both participated in the Paul Short Run held at Lehigh University in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. The Hokies' Peter Seufer won the race, leading the men's team to a second-place finish. On the women's side, Lauren Berman came in 12th to guide the Tech women's team to a third-place finish.

OTHER NOTES
• Tech's staff plans to compete 12 runners on both the men's and women's squads in this race.
 
• Seufer is coming off a meet in which his performance earned him ACC Co-Performer of the Week. The win marked the second of his career, with the other win coming at the Virginia Tech Alumni Invite in 2016.
 
• Seufer, Fitsum Seyoum and Ben Fleming all have finished in the top 10 at each of the Hokies' past two meets. Bashir Mosavel-Lo has finished in the top 12 in each of those meets.
 
• Berman and Sara Freix both have finished in the top 30 in each of the Hokies' past two meets, while Sarah Edwards has been in the top 40 of those same meets.
 
• Shannon Quinn's time of 23:32 at the Paul Short Run marked her career best for the 6K distance.
