Men’s golf opens fall season at Duke

The Virginia Tech men's golf team opens the fall portion of the 2018-19 season with a trip to the Rod Myers Invitational. The two-day event will be played Saturday and Sunday, September 8 and 9, at the Duke University Golf Course in Durham, N.C.

Though this is the team's first appearance in the event, over the years, the Hokies have played many rounds at the Duke University Golf Course. Tech made the previously-named Duke Fall Classic an annual stop for many years and in 2001, the Hokies finished eighth in the NCAA Men's Golf Championship on this course. The course is a Robert Trent Jones Sr. and Rees Jones design, playing to 7,154 yards and a par 72. The event is named in memory of long-time Duke golf coach Rod Myers.

Playing in the first position for the Hokies is Joey Jordan, a senior from Richmond, Virginia. Jordan joined the Hokies in the spring last season, playing in four events. His best finish was a tie for 16th in his first event at the Furman Intercollegiate.

In the second spot for Tech is Connor Burgess, a sophomore from Lynchburg, Virginia. Burgess was fifth on the team in scoring as a freshman. He finished second at the Janney Invitational and finished 20th at the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate at Blackthorn Club last fall.

Newcomer Connor Johnson Jr., will play third for the Hokies. The freshman from Richmond is making his collegiate debut this weekend. A highly-decorated junior golfer, Johnson won the 2018 VSGA State Junior Championship this summer.

The second newcomer in the line-up is Drew Brockwell. The freshman from Chesterfield, Virginia also enjoyed a stellar junior career. He was a high school teammate of Johnson and the duo won the 2018 VSGA Junior Four-Ball Championship this summer.

Playing fifth for the Hokies is Tom Crow. The junior from Virginia Beach, Virginia, played in four events last season and 10 events since coming to Virginia Tech.

Tech is one of four ACC teams in the 13-team field, joining host Duke, North Carolina and Florida State. Three teams in the tournament were ranked in the final Golfstat.com Top 25, plus two more in the Top 50.
