Hokies host top ranked Wake Forest in home opener Friday

BLACKSBURG - The No. 16 Virginia Tech men's soccer team will take on top ranked Wake Forest at Thompson Field on Friday night, with kickoff set for 5:30 p.m. Coverage will be available on ACC Network Extra with Andrew Allegretta and Kyler Pilling on the broadcast.  
 
Tech has reached this point in the season undefeated, despite not playing at home. After two neutral site games in Harrisonburg, Tech has battled through four consecutive games on the road.

The Hokies (4-0-2, 0-0-1 ACC)
Tech is coming off of a 2-0 shutout win against UNCG late on Tuesday evening. Captain Jon Ingason scored his first collegiate goal off of a free kick putting the Hokies up 1-0 six minutes into the game before lightning in the area delayed the match for two hours. Nico Quashie's goal in the 85th minute closed the door on the Spartans, securing the victory in a game that ended past 11:30 in the evening.  
 
Virginia Tech has an all-time record of 3-9-2 against No. 1 teams, which includes last season's triumph at home over Notre Dame. Tech defeated the Irish 2-1 behind two goals from first team All-ACC performer Marcelo Acuna.
 
The Deacons (6-0, 1-0 ACC)
Wake Forest enters as the top ranked team in the country, standing at 6-0 after Tuesday night's 2-0 victory over Georgia Southern.  The Deacons also boast a league win over NC State and an overtime victory over the Indiana Hoosiers when they stood at No. 2 nationally.
 
Omir Fernandez and Alistair Johnston both picked up goals in the Deacons' win vs. Georgia Southern on Tuesday. Fernandez has been in good form, scoring four goals in the past three games.
 
Series History
This fixture was played twice in 2017, with Wake Forest winning both times by a score of 3-0 at Spry Stadium in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.
 
The series between Virginia Tech and Wake Forest dates back to 1980 with the Deacons leading with an all time record of (19-3-2) against the Hokies.
