The Virginia Tech women's golf team posted a three-round total of 8-over 872 and finished in second place at the Minnesota Invitational on Tuesday afternoon. The two-day event, hosted by the University of Minnesota, was played at the 6,479-yard, par 72 Prestwick Golf Club in Woodbury, Minnesota.
The second place finish is tied for the school's best-ever finish in an event. Tech tied for second in the Starmount Fall Classic in October of 2016. Tech shot a 5-under 283 in Monday's morning round and followed that with a 290 in the afternoon's round. The Hokies were in third place after the second round and posted a 299 in the final round on Tuesday to climb one spot in the final results.
Emily Mahar posted her career-best finish at Minnesota. The sophomore from Brisbane, Australia, carded a three-round total of 3-under 213 and finished alone in second place. She finished six strokes behind medalist Natasha Andrea Oon of San Jose State. Mahar posted three rounds of par-or-better in the tournament.
Jessica Spicer, a junior from Bahama, North Carolina, tied for ninth place at 217 and Amanda Hollandsworth, a graduate student from Floyd, Virginia, tied for 17th at 220. Keera Foocharoen, a freshman from Bangkok, Thailand, tied for 35th at 223 in her first collegiate event and Elizabeth Bose, a senior from Norfolk, Virginia, tied for 42nd at 225.
San Jose State won the team title with a 4-under 86-, 12 strokes ahead of the Hokies. ACC foe Louisville was third at 873, East Carolina was fourth at 874, Kentucky was fifth at 880 and Middle Tennessee State was sixth at 881. Notre Dame was seventh at 882, Oklahoma and Kansas tied for eighth at 883, Missouri was 10th at 886 and North Texas was 11th at 899. Rutgers finished 12th at 900, San Francisco was 13th at 902, host Minnesota was 14th at 908 and South Dakota State was 15th at 909.
The Hokies return to the course on Sept. 24 and 25, as they compete in the Golfweek Challenge. The two-day event will be played at the Red Sky Golf Club in Vail, Colorado.
